Outreach

O: Outreach is about reaching out beyond your normal recruiting practices.

It takes intentionality to practice Outreach, but it is crucial if you want to BeCOME an ally.

Here’s a challenge for you … Look at your own job description and ask yourself:

  • Is it gender neutral? 
  • Is it inviting to others? 
  • Does it ask for things that are required, or things that are points of privilege?
  • Is it inclusive enough for those who don’t have the same points of privilege?
  • Can you identify 3-5 words or phrases in them that may have some cultural insensitivity, political insensitivity, gender bias or socio-economic bias embedded?
  • How could your job description be rewritten to get to the essence of what is required and not exclude applicants who may not have had the same privileges of education or opportunity?

If you don’t have a job description, could you write one that is inviting and inclusive?
