How do you take action to develop allyship in your organization?

How you can be intentional as an ally?

You just need to remember to BeCOME … 

Connect: Expand your network with intention to make it more diverse.

Outreach: Work with intention to adopt practices that will facilitate more diverse hiring practices.

Mentor: Work with intention to have diversity in those you choose to mentor.

Empower: Lift others up and create an inclusive environment that gives voice to everyone and allows them to be heard and seen for who they are.

Connect

The BeCOME framework starts with C: Connect …

As an ally, ask yourself:

  • How diverse is my network?
  • Who can I connect to others in my network?
  • Who in my network needs an ally?
  • What can I do about it?

What would Connecting – or expanding your network – look like in your industry/company and for you personally?

We encourage you to think big:
Join others to address problems; be approachable; be intentional; and be aware that your position and network are assets you have that you can generously share with others.

Outreach

O: Outreach is about reaching out beyond your normal recruiting practices.

It takes intentionality to practice Outreach, but it is crucial if you want to BeCOME an ally.

Here’s a challenge for you … Look at your own job description and ask yourself:

  • Is it gender neutral? 
  • Is it inviting to others? 
  • Does it ask for things that are required, or things that are points of privilege?
  • Is it inclusive enough for those who don’t have the same points of privilege?
  • Can you identify 3-5 words or phrases in them that may have some cultural insensitivity, political insensitivity, gender bias or socio-economic bias embedded?
  • How could your job description be rewritten to get to the essence of what is required and not exclude applicants who may not have had the same privileges of education or opportunity?

If you don’t have a job description, could you write one that is inviting and inclusive?
